I came home last night, checked my box of Windsor brand table salt and found that, sure enough, it contains sugar. Sugar in salt. This news disturbs me for two reasons. First, I cook with this salt on occasion and I am not supposed to eat refined sugar (I can pretty much assure you the sugar in the salt is refined). The second reason this disturbs me is that I did not know that my salt contains sugar. I read labels all the time. Obsessively. When asked what I do for a living not long ago my son answered “She’s the food police”. Yet it never occurred to me to read the label on my box of salt. I am embarrassed. I am also getting new salt!

But enough about me. This tidbit about the sugar in the salt came up during the food label reading segment of the six week nutrition and lifestyle seminar series I am currently attending. The series is offered by Kitchener-Waterloo based Naturopathic Doctors Robin Walsh and Krystijana Rakic. Robin is the talented woman who helped my son with his food allergies and for that I will be forever grateful to her. In addition to being an absolute encyclopedia of information, Robin is a dynamic speaker. Krystijana is every bit as enthusiastic and like Robin, you can see that she is giving up her evenings to teach these seminars because she truly gives a damn.

Each two hour session breezes by filled with a combination of lecture, audience interaction and video clips plus a periodic stretch and a nutritious snack. The focus is food and lifestyle with just enough science thrown in to convince attendees this stuff is for real.

Both women have thriving private practices and its clear when they speak that they really are there to give people the tools to be healthy and able to enjoy life rather than just avoiding the onset of chronic illness. The seminar series is fittingly titled Vibrant Living Changing Lives One Lifestyle at a Time. New streams of the seminar are starting in the next couple of months so if you are in the Kitchener-Waterloo area I encourage you to check it out!

My husband and I recently participated in the “Vibrant Living Series” presented by Robin Walsh ND and Kristijana Rakic ND.

The six week course is jammed packed with up to date information that builds a foundation for good decision making. You understand not only what to do to improve your health and vitality, but why.

The Naturapathic Doctors are passionate in their beliefs and presentation. The classes moved quickly supported by visuals like video clips and power point. Yummy snacks were available, like hummus and vegetables and nutrition bars.

The homework assignments were simple and relevant to support a lifestyle change. Whether we were identifying goals, managing stressors, restructuring our eating patterns, or detoxifying, the action steps reflected the lessons and personalized the information.

The body composition analysis every second week, gave real feedback on the implementation of the diet changes.

It was especially powerful for my husband and I because we were both hearing and implementing the same program. My husband desires to live a healthy life, but is not particlarly interested in reading and studying about it. The once a week sessions with easily implemented goals were appealing to him, and he felt the impact as his weight began to drop and his energy increase.

The Vibrant Living Series has had a profound effect on our lifestyle and eating. Thank you Robin and Kristijana for your inspiring course.

I have struggled with weight issues all my life. I would loose weight and gain back more that I had lost. I have tried every diet plan out there including Gastric Bypass Surgery. However, I never really understood why I would eat all the wrong foods even though I knew what was healthy and was not.

Finally the light bulb turned on, after listening to Robin and Kristijana talk at the Vibrant Living seminar on Emotional Eating, I got it. I guess it was the way that they talked about it and the way they used gestures to explain it.

I thought that they were talking about me and that they were in my head. That was a very scary feeling but a great feeling at the same time to finally be able to understand why I always sabotage myself.  I decided to take on the mantra of “if you do not like what I am doing for my health then that is your problem. Not Mine.” This is the approach that I am taking with my friends and family. After all it is my life not theirs.

I have finally been able to identify my triggers that set me off on my emotional eating binges. I also realized that not only do I eat when I am stressed but I am a creature of habit, going to the grocery store is a very dangerous place for me. I can be so good and then I get to cash and what is there, chocolate and chips. They always jump into my cart and then into my mouth. Plus certain family members are my triggers.

I have also been able to identify my “Robbers and my Promoters” This will help me with success in my daily challenges of putting food into my mouth. Now I have to find ways to cope with stress, grocery shopping and family members without reaching for the bad foods. This is going to be a long tough road but I have put some resources and supports into place so that I can cope better. I also know that if I fall a little that it is not the end of the world, it just means that I have to get back on the horse and keep going.

I have lost over 20 pounds since I have been with Robin, I feel great and I am looking forward to more weight loss. It is a daily struggle but something I am willing to struggle with to accomplish my goals. I have 4 grandchildren and I want to be around to see them grow up and have children of their own. I will do this.

The Vibrant Living Seminars have been great and very realistic and informative. I feel like I am getting information provided to me in terms and language that I understand, not language that I need to go and learn.

Thanks Robin and Kristijana, you are wonderful people.

Each night of this six week course I was amazed at the amount of useful information that was presented to the group. Each session focused on a new topic and was delivered in a clear and concise manner. Within each of these sessions, there was an action plan that was handed out and talked about. These were not your normal action plans were the expectations were way out of reach. They were small steps that you can everyone could take. This approach made it simple to incorporate these changes during my day and I am still on track weeks after the sessions ended.

I also found it energizing to have the two presenters with that much passion about the subject matter; you can tell that they really believe in they were saying and want help you achieve your goals.

I found both Robin’s and Kristijana’s positive attitude to be infectious and would recommend this series to people who are looking for a healthier lifestyle.
